June 28: THE ARTHUR FIREWORKS CELEBRATION
Each year Jurgens Park, located on the south edge of Arthur, busts at the seams as young & old alike come to watch with eager anticipation Arthur’s Annual Fireworks Celebration. This annual event is central Illinois’ biggest fireworks display & is sponsored by The Arthur Rotary Club, The Village of Arthur, The Arthur Park Board and Okaw Truss with an estimated value in excess of $45,000.00. Handicapped parking is available on site.
Beginning at 4 pm, food stands will open and the Arthur Fire Department will begin launching “Arthur Fireworks-2008” t-shirts into the crowd. The Rural Aviator will also drop t-shirts from his powered parachute as he flies over the country roads (weather permitting). This free event will continue until all of the t-shirts are fired or dropped!
The Air Show will precede the fireworks and will feature the WW II T-6 aircraft and skydivers from Mid-America Sport Parachute Club from Taylorville, Illinois with the final skydiver bringing in the American Flag. Back this year is Central Illinois Air from Mattoon offering Helicopter rides on site beginning at approximately 4 pm with a cost of $20.00 per person. This Air Show has been a crowd favorite for seven years and will include, tentatively, a Military Flyover.
The Gigantic Fireworks Display will begin at approximately 9:30 pm and will feature exotic and unique Italian, Spanish, and Japanese shells that have never before been seen in North America and will include an 8” diameter by 36” long, multi-break Shell, which will be fired at the end of Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of The Moon.” The fireworks thousands of shells including 12”, 10”, 8”, and 6”, to be fired during the 24 minute display, are timed to be simulcast to music on 106.7 FM, The Fox. A.M. Pyrotechnics in Buffalo, MO are supplying the fireworks with the actual show firing sequence designed by John Leslie.
We have located on 16” shell but this will be the FINAL year for the 16” shell due to import restrictions, but we wanted one more to dedicate to Roger Oye (Roger sponsored a 16” shell every year since 2000 when the first 16” shell was fired) so this will be the last chance to experience what 40,000 spectators witnessed in the sky over Arthur last year. Once, again, the 16” shell will be fired as Kate Smith sings “God Bless America”, and is sponsored by Oye’s Hardware in Arthur and dedicated to the life & memory of Roger Oye.
The Arthur Fireworks has featured the famous “Wall of Fire”, Hollywood special effect, created by 500 feet of Fireballs on the ground producing a wall of flame 75 feet high that has, for years, thrilled thousands of our guest spectators.
This year, for the first time, the Arthur Fireworks are excited to announce the addition of Lampare Shells which literally recreate the Fireballs, not on the ground, but in the sky above! To create this ball of fire in the sky, a Lampare Shell (which consist of a lift charge, flash powder & liquid jet fuel) is fired from a mortar and upon reaching the proper height above the ground, the flash powder charge is detonated which ignites the jet fuel and a large fireball is created! A truly spectacular and unforgettable firework experience! The rarity of the Lampare Shell is due mainly to the hazardous nature in the manufacturing of the shell, which makes this pyrotechnic device almost impossible to find. However, due to the rarity of this shell, it will be an EXCLUSIVE for the 2008 Arthur Fireworks, and will not be available to any other display in this part of America! This shell has attained almost mythical status, as many pyrotechnic fans have read about this shell, they have heard stories about this shell, or they’ve talked to people that have seen it, but very few have actually experienced it in person. Until now – in Arthur, Illinois – on Saturday, June 28th, 2008 – 9:30 pm in Jurgens Park!
